Most families and small businesses start colour printing with an inkjet printer.
Inkjet printers are usually inexpensive to buy and operate.
In addition, they don't require much space and many models combine a scanner and/or a fax with the printer.
All inkjet printers print in colour and use ink in black, cyan (blue), yellow and magenta (pink/red colour), although it's possible in very few models to install only black cartridges (you might do this if your inkjet printer is used only as a fax machine).
Colour cartridges used in inkjet printers fall into two categories:
All-in-one colour cartridges
An all-in-one colour cartridge contains the cyan, magenta and yellow ink in one cartridge. This makes it easy to use.
Separate colour cartridges
Separate colour cartridges (often called ink tanks) are effective when you print a lot of the same colour. For example, if your logo is mostly blue like The Cartridge Family logo, you would be able to replace the cyan ink tank more often than the other colours and not waste them.
High and low-yield (capacity) cartridges
When you buy your inkjet printer, the supplier generally includes half-filled, or low-yield, cartridges. With many printers it's possible to purchase high-yield cartridges (or ink tanks). These high-yield cartridges are always more economical, as the low-yields are usually half the capacity but much more than half the price. Be aware that many of the large stationery suppliers don't stock high-yield cartridges. Why would they when low-yield cartridges mean you come back more often and pay more for your cartridges?
If you rarely print, low-yield cartridges might be a better option and can save you money.
Inkjet printer manufacturers often change the design or capacity of cartridges when they introduce new models. Finding the right cartridge for your inkjet printer can sometimes be confusing.
